God Helps Everybody Who Wants to Help Themselves

I’m a farmer’s son. I belonged to a very poor Indian family. But I wanted to do something in my life.  When you are in a rural area, you have a poor background, and most of your family is not educated, then the problem becomes bigger.

The only thing that  kept me focused and always on the run was the belief in one God. I always thought that one day I would  succeed. That was my firm faith. And that was all based on my faith that God helps everybody who wants to help themselves.

I got into medical college and became a doctor. And then I came to Australia and there were different circumstances. I had to struggle hard. But I still believed in God that I would succeed.

I always relied on God. I have to think about when I did not rely. But that doesn’t mean that we should sit and think that everything will be done for us. No. Do your best and leave everything else up to God. You need to make a best effort to achieve it. And you need to keep on trying and trying. One day you will get what you want.

There’s one concept in Sikhism that if you think good, if you read good, that’s good. If you believe in yourself, that’s good. But there is something higher than that. You must practice that good thing in your life, otherwise it doesn’t mean anything in your life.
