The Charleston Interfaith Coalition hosted a 3 hour Sacred Listening Workshop facilitated by Daniel Epstein on Sunday, July 31st, 2022. The workshop took place in the Pauline Books & Media Center in downtown Charleston thanks to the hospitality of Sister Margaret Kerry. Brandon Fish of the Jewish Community Relations Council played a key role in bringing the session to fruition. There were approximately 20 participants from a variety of faith communities. This was our second Sacred Listening Workshop. In these workshops, Daniel Epstein shares the Portraits in Faith content, starting with a “photographic meditation” and video clips of how people around the world have answered some of the key questions in the documentary project. Daniel then invites people to ask and listen to the responses to these questions from someone in the room they do not know or know very well. We then reflect on notions of “the other,” including who we each see as “the other” and when we have felt like “the other.” The goal of Sacred Listening Workshops is to provide an experience of listening to the story of people we perceive to be “the other” and to deepen our understanding that there is no “other” and that we are all on a spiritual journey together. Daniel is making these Sacred Listening Workshops available for free to any congregation or organization that wishes to sponsor one. He can be reached HERE.
